I know how it feels to be scrambling for an outfit at the last minute, clothes everywhere, none feeling right… don’t let this be you! Choosing your photoshoot outfits in advance will prevent stress and make the process more enjoyable as you feel prepared and confident for your photography session.
The outfits you and your partner chose will influence the overall look and feeling of your photos, so being intentional about what you wear will go a long way.
TIPS from your professional photographer:
Try to choose a color palette that will compliment the environment and season you will be in. For example, cool coastal tones at the beach, or soft pastel hues in spring. There is no need to be afraid of color, however, neutrals are always a safe, timeless choice (white, tan, brown, etc.).
Solid colors usually translate best in photos, but a pop of print can be fun too! Textures and layers will add interest. If one of you wears a statement piece (like a bold dress or patterned suit), keep the other’s outfit more understated to balance the overall look.
Don’t underestimate the power of accessories: sunglasses, scarf, jewelry, a statement handbag, heels with a color pop, a bow in your hair, a sunhat, a bouquet, etc.
Don’t overlook your shoes! Choosing stylish, clean shoes that match the vibe of your outfits (whether that’s a cute pair of heels, boots, Mary Janes, or classic loafers, this will elevate your look much more than sneakers or your daily flip-flops).
Avoid big logos, Apple watches, busy patterns, text, or too many colors..
You can be as casual or as dressy as you’d like. Or even one outfit of each! For the dressier outfit, think cocktail attire, or wedding guest, or date night. If you’re going casual, perhaps a white linen shirt and khakis for him, and sundress for her, or jeans/chinos and sweaters if it’s chilly. Opting for a classic rather than trendy style will stand the test of time.
Choose something you will be comfortable and confident in! My photography style is full of movement, so you may be walking, twirling, and moving all around.

Outfit #1: two shades of jean with neutral shirtsOutfit #2: white button down shirt with chinos, and a cream dressThis couple opted for a casual and semi-formal look in neutral tones of white, cream, tan, and denim.
A Few More Tips & Tricks:
Do you fancy something designer or unique? Consider a trial membership (and cancel anytime) to a rental service like Rent the Runway or Nuuly, where you can choose a handful of high-end pieces to borrow and return after the shoot!
Consider pampering yourself, it’s the perfect excuse to get your hair or makeup or nails done, and treat yourselves to a dinner date night afterwards!
If you bring your dog, bring treats and/or a squeaky toy that I can use to get their attention. If you want some photos with and some without your furry baby, having a friend come along for dog-duty is helpful for the time we want pawless pictures.
Props:Nothing is needed by any means, just yourselves! But if you really want to bring a little something, make sure it compliments the location and your outfits, for example, a vintage basket with fresh flowers pairs with a garden location… or a quilted picnic blanket, charcuterie board, and wine glasses pairs with a countryside location… a musical instrument if you play one could add an artistic, personal touch.
